Richard Morgan has published nine books of poetry. His latest, Poems of Your Own: A Guide to Writing Personal Poetry, gives insight and inspiration in the process of writing personal poetry.

Richard's poems are eclectic, partly personal, and always accessible. They concern strangers and family, love and life, courage and loss. Pat Morgan, Richard’s wife, has contributed her watercolors to most of his books adding a special dimension to the poems rarely found in poetry books.

Pat and Richard live on a hillside in Hendersonville, North Carolina where the wind is their constant companion.

      PERSONAL POETRY

I believe there is poetry in all of us.

It can be the warm words you include in a birthday card, or words carefully chosen to express your grief in a condolence note, or words you write to express joy, love or frustration and then put away in a special drawer for safe keeping.

Once written, words make feelings more real expressing the subtle rhythms of your heart. They are poetry, your personal poetry.

I believe this down to my toes:

      I teach and encourage this

      to whoever will listen.

       HOW I MET MY WIFE

As an 18 year old lifeguard

Feeling on top of the world,

I sat alone waiting to save others,

      But she shyly approached, smiled

And saved me.  It was 1968.

      Her smooth, tanned skin

      Played hide-and-seek

      With her pale bikini.

From my perch I stared far too long.

She asked me if I liked the Beatles.

Trying to be cool I asked her why.

She replied, “I could never marry anyone

      Who didn’t like the Beatles.”

I jumped off my lifeguard’s chair,

Looked into her innocent eyes and

      Told her, “Ringo’s my favorite.”
